What do I need to Provide?

You will need to provide desired dimensions of the project you want to build.  If the project is a built-in, such as built-in entertainment center, you will need to provide the wall dimensions and the locations of any outlets, switches, etc.  Don't worry, I will guide you through the measuring process.

I will ask you to answer a series of questions about your project, the desired outcome and what you plan to do with it, the environment it is going to be in, the tools you have an your abilities.  Your enjoyment of the project hinges on getting me accurate answers to these questions.

How do I pay?

Payment in full is required once we have agreed on the scope of the project, prior to any design work.  I accept checks and credit card payments through Paypal.

Can I get a printed copy of my design?

How does the process work?

Essentially there are 5 steps.

Step 1 - You explain to me what you want designed by phone or email.

Step 2 - I will ask specific questions about the project.  I send you a questionnaire about your experience, tools and resources.

Step 3 - I review the information from Step 2 and send you a rough sketch and/or description of the project along with a quote.

Step 4 - Provided we are in agreement and payment is received, I start to develop your personalized design.  In this step, there are usually a few questions along the way.

Step 5 - You receive your design via your chosen method.

What if I don't understand the instructions?

At any skill level, there is a basic level of common sense and familiarity with basic principles that is expected in order to follow any plans.  That being said, I am more than happy to respond to email questions within 24 hours on any business day and am willing to consult by phone for free for one half hour.  I recommend you read all instructions prior to starting anything and email questions about anything you are unsure about.  This tends to ensure you will enjoy your woodworking project with little to no stress.

Do I need to have professional woodworking experience?

No.  If you have a circular saw and some clamps, I can draw instructions on how to build your own amazingly good looking kitchen cabinets. However, this is not for everyone.  I can tailor woodworking plans to a wide range of experience levels but it would be unwise to take on a highly complicated project if you have no experience whatsoever.  I reserve the right to recommend a you hire a professional to at least help with the project if it seems you are very under qualified.  I do this to help you enjoy woodworking and the benefits of a project well done, not to put anyone down or stroke my own ego. I am not there with you to teach you how to use your tools or make minor adjustments due to common variances in materials.   If I should suggest it would be unwise to take on a particular project by yourself, that just means you need to get a few "warm up" projects under your belt before you take on something really challenging.  I believe almost anyone can achieve great results with a little patience, practice and good instructions.

What types of projects can I have designed?

As long as it is within the realm of woodworking, just about anything.  I have a very wide range of experience under my belt and there are few projects out of my reach.  I will tell you if I am the wrong choice for you before you commit any money.  If you want to build a specific piece of furniture, built in entertainment center, build your own kitchen cabinets, closet system, workstation, etc., call or send me an email.  If you want to put an addition onto your house or build a garage, I will be happy to suggest some other resources for you.

Can you provide plans for me to give to a local professional contractor?

Absolutely.  There are lots of highly skilled handymen and woodworkers out there that can do a great job building your project if they only understood exactly what you wanted.  As a former professional homebuilder, I never sent my trim carpenter into a house to do anything custom without a very clear set of plans.  That doesn't mean they weren't any good, in fact they were excellent.  They just needed to know how to build exactly what the homeowner wanted.  When setting up plans for a professional, They are less like instructions and more like blueprints, which is less expensive to you and more appreciated by the professional.

How much does a set of plans cost?

It varies by scope of the project.  Typically costs are between $149 and $499.  Certainly far less than hiring a professional contractor and often, just the information in the plan notes will save you enough to pay for the plans.  Stock plans are priced as marked.
